About Maryland Legacy Law

I started Maryland Legacy Law to serve my neighbors in Silver Spring, Washington D.C., and throughout central Maryland. I walk alongside families as they have important - and sometimes difficult - conversations about the future. Talking about death and incapacity can be challenging, but we all know that at least one of these things is inevitable. Instead of focusing on death, I like to focus on the opportunities we have right now to live the legacies we want to leave behind - both in the legal planning process and in our daily lives. I practice a “human centered” version of estate planning, not a “stuff centered” version, and I approach this work from a desire to connect with my neighbors and add more good energy to the world.

Our Firm’s Core Values

Curiosity. We are curious about the lives, families, and values of everyone we work with - curious enough to schedule the extra meeting and ask the questions that might lead to that extra round of revisions.

Connection. We value a deep and trusting relationship with each of our clients. This connection allows clients to relax during difficult conversations and makes them more likely to ask follow-up questions that lead to deeper understanding. We learn the names of a client's family members and their interests, a client’s hopes and fears, and bring warmth and humor to what can otherwise feel like just another administrative life task.

Empathetic Education. We meet clients where they are and no one is shamed for not understanding complex topics on the first or second try. We use visual aids, written memos and summaries, and other means to help clients truly understand their options, the potential consequences of their choices, and the mechanics of their documents. We offer wraparound support for ongoing plan maintenance and alignment, understanding that this is vital for clients’ effective use of their plans in their everyday lives.

People-Focused, not Paperwork-Focused. We are not a document-mill. We choose people over paperwork at every opportunity and invest in a high-touch process that gives clients a lot of access to their attorney. While we use technology to automate some tasks, we sometimes prefer a less efficient but more human-centered process. We are not suit-wearing siloed professionals writing contracts. We are people helping our neighbors.

Meet Jen, Lead Attorney

I’m an attorney licensed to practice in Maryland and D.C., and a seminary-trained pastor-type. Since graduating from Emory Law School and Candler School of Theology, I’ve practiced family law, child advocacy law, and estate planning, both for firms and for legal services organizations. I’ve also served on staff at a church, leading adult classes and working with youth and young adults. I enjoy a well-written statute, almost as much as I enjoy talking with people of all ages about where they find meaning in life.

I’m originally from Downingtown, Pennsylvania, and found my way to Maryland through my college years at the University of Maryland. I volunteer regularly with our wonderful church community, our local elementary school, and with legal non-profits seeking to make legal services ever-more accessible. My great joys these days are adventuring with my spouse, kiddos, coaching herds of children learning to play soccer, and spending time with the extended family we’re lucky enough to have close by. When I’m not working or parenting, I might be gardening, writing, watching Ted Lasso, or in pursuit of cardamom flavored ice cream.

 Meet Heather

Legal Assistant

While my background is in the business world, I have always had an interest in law. For over two decades I have loved marketing, strategizing, creating content and designing for a myriad of clients. Earning an MBA has created a foundation and thorough understanding of planning and finances, and building relationships with clients has always been a favorite part of what I do.  I am a problem solver at heart.

I enjoy finding adventures with my husband, our 2 children and our giant dog along the East Coast.  Gathering with friends, fostering dogs, hiking and road trips are always high on our to-do list.
